The sunlight of early morning spread throughout the buildings and spires, casting long shadows. Lights that illuminated the night, slowly faded to darkness. Public shuttle transportation zipped about, controlled to pinpoint accuracy by the central city computer system. Everything was normal. The people went about their daily routines. Many were listening to the news of the day. Others were talking to friends or relatives. Still others were already in the midst of conducting business and finance. A city-wide bulletin reminded everyone that the weather control network would be bringing rain that night, so wearing the appropriate gear was advised to all that would be out. The Yoran cyber network functioned through chips that were implanted in the people, just below the skin, at the base of the skull. Life on Yora III was comfortable. Life on Yora III was very good. Unfortunately, the people did not realize there was a price to pay for their comfort. Most of the people worked their jobs, or studied in school, simply so they could earn enough to become connected to the cyber network. Children grew up and moved to their own apartments, and people married and had children, but the ultimate goal in life was to be connected. Imagine everything that could be experienced and enjoyed! Interactive entertainment. News. Information. Social networking. All one could want. The price? Addiction. Their brains were so hyper-stimulated, a high was produced. To maintain it, more and more had to be input. And why not? Wasn't this what those that colonized the world had striven for, so those that followed could enjoy life to its fullest? Even Earth could not rival the standard of living on Yora III. It was all there for the having, so why not take it? Sadly, there were those that felt this technological lifestyle was bad, that people were becoming numb and unproductive. At first, they had simply spoken out against it, but eventually, they moved away from Yora City and established rural communities with technology to help them, and not control them. Controlled by the technology? Ha! These foolish people had no idea of what they were missing. The city had no poverty and no crime. Why should any of that exist, when the technology made life so easy? The days of hard work and long hours, had ceased. It was a new era. Without warning, it all stopped. (reply none) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Rosenante, Observation Lounge, CO Captain Sanok, Day 1, 1005) Nearly three-and-a-half months had passed since Sanok had taken the Rosenante out of space dock from SB Geneva as her new captain and commanding officer. They had returned to their regular patrol route, with little activity. There had been the usual scientific scans and studies, a few visits to colonies to resupply, and meeting another starship for some crew transfers. They had even avoided one of the plasma storms indigenous to the sector. All-in-all, it had been quiet and routine. Then came orders from Starfleet to respond to a distress call. Sanok had assembled the senior staff to brief them. "We are currently on our way to Yora III. As you know, the Yorans are known for their advanced computer hardware and technology. Starfleet, and others, have contracts with them to supply the latest in computer chips. The planet was colonized approximately 100 years ago, and is inhabited primarily by Humans. The population is around 200,000. The vast majority live in Yora City, with a small number choosing a rural existence. "Power in the city has gone out completely, leaving the city without basic services. This happened two days ago. We will arrive in several hours and will be the first vessel to render aid. Other ships are coming, but we will be on our own until they do. "Almost nothing is known about how or why the outage occurred, as Starfleet received the call for help from one of the rural communities. It is also not known why the Yorans have been unable to make repairs themselves. "We will offer whatever assistance we can. Matrix and Nolar, you will make yourselves and your engineering crews available to assist with repairs. Jackson and Signos, you will coordinate with local law enforcement to keep order and prevent looting. Doctor Andersen, you and your staff will render medical aid as needed. Ensign C'nell, I am putting you in charge of providing food and water to the Yorans." Sanok paused and glanced at the group. Some of them were new, and many of them were working together for the first time, but he knew they would get the job done. "Are there any questions?" (reply any) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Rosenante, Observation Lounge, 2O/CSec LCDR Tom Jackson, Day 1, 1006) Tom sat upfront with the skipper and first officer. The post yard repair shake down period was over and Tom felt a new mission. His senses had been honed by years of Fleet service and were rarely wrong. Captain Sanok spoke of the upcoming mission and laid out what he wanted each area to handle. Yora III was experiencing a city wide loss of power. Jackson perked up at that! He began to wonder if this was the of sabotage? Sanok directed that he and Signos were to work on keeping order and preventing looting. Tom’s mind went to work. He wondered if Signos would go along with what he had in mind. Basically the Security folks working for Tom would assist the local authorities with keeping the peace. They’d be like auxiliary police. Jackson wanted to have his troops paired up with a local law enforcement type. Tom was thinking of asking Jessica to use the tactical folks to put out any ‘fires’ that might erupt. (Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill W.) ----- (Rosenante, Observation Lounge, CMO Ensign (sg) Ailyn Andersen, Day 1, 1007) So many days have passed and Ailyn lost the count. It was more then three months ago since the last time she heard Taylor or the rest of her merc crew, yet, for unknown reason to her - something she just couldn't explain, she really missed her. She felt alone most of the times. Even though she was brought up to be cold, and to never show her true emotions, she was still afraid of being alone, forever. Unsure what she could offer to a woman such as Taylor, she knew that, at least at this point in time, she could not give her what she wanted - her passion, devotion and love. Yet, she was comforted by knowing that, even despite she clearly stated this to Taylor the last time they met, that Taylor would not try to change her feelings, and would always be there for her. She was unsure if she really felt something for Taylor, and she was even more unsure if Taylor was speaking truth. Her body language surely gave away the fact she liked Ailyn's company, but was her words true, or she was just playing a hopeless romantic so she could, just as Ailyn, find someone... or something with enough understanding and compassion? It's a tricky business, playing with emotions. The stakes are high, the failure rate even higher, yet so many play that game. Perhaps - to others at least - these turmoil of positive and negative emotions they get as a feedback is what keeps them going, keeps them feeling alive, or perhaps even giving them purpose. Ailyn felt she had a higher purpose, though, and her batteries would run super low when in company with others. She preferred to remain secluded, her eyes and mind in her neverending work, as if she was a dragon in a secluded cave guarding her eggs. Perhaps the reason she allowed that to happen with Taylor was the fact Taylor knew all about her work and still accepted her. "Playing all cards open on a table is hardly a way to win a poker game, but a simplest of ways to get the girls." she remembered a saying of a man she once knew, starting to laugh at the pun of it. She did, however, often made contact with Taylor, under a guise it's her childhood friend. They both knew the low-priority Starfleet channels are easily intercepted and even more easily monitored. Their conversations were often mysterious and unusual for the fact they used expressions with many meanings, hidden meanings or sometimes even words and expressions having complete different meaning then what they intended. Ailyn never liked playing the spy game, but she was caught into it. Through several talks with her mother, she finally got her talking more of her father. When she was in mental institution, she would hear her father talking with her in front of the doors, the voice was unmistakingly his - as her mother described, pointing Ailyn to believe her mother's illness is coming back. She did not hear anything from the General ever since the last time they talked at the Alaska base. Her last orders were to notify them through specific subspace channel of any bigger happenings on the Rose, and to closely monitor Jessica Signos. Ailyn had no clue what was the big fuss about Signos, but she understood a woman with a high military knowledge, lethality in melee combat, with extensive experience in high crisis scenarios would certainly be the kind of material for a potential recruit. Why wasn't she to approach her already, she had no idea, and she was said no more about the matter. The Rose was back on boring patrol duty. The days, like an neverending London rain, poured one into the other, the days filled with routine seemed to last for ages. Sure, there were some scientific scans, some cataloging of new dust particles, few of the trips to fresh colonies and resupply outposts, with few of the new faces joining the Rose, but the patrol duty really felt like a slow walk through a park where, every once in a while, you'd stop to sit on a bench and take few pictures of tress, then continue the walk. Most of the days she literally had to invent stuff to do, because there just wasn't things to do. And she couldn't just be on the ship useless. And then, out of the blue, she, as well as all senior staff, were summon by Captain Sanok to the observation lounge. She immediately knew something is going about, since these meetings would happen ever so little of times. Before entering, she heard they got the distress call, but being in the sickbay, she didn't heard it herself. She took a seat somewhere in the middle, having a vacant chair to the right of her, a glass of water in front and an PADD in her left hand. "We are currently on our way to Yora III. As you know, the Yorans are known for their advanced computer hardware and technology." That was the first thing she heard Sanok speaking, and immediately she knew what he was talking about. The new generation of isolinear optical chips far surpassed the earlier version, and when used with bio neural gel packs of the newer generations, they provided the basis of modern data and control circuitry on new Starfleet designs. Dedicating some of her times to study the bio neural gel packs - as a basis for artificial bio brains - she understood the technology, and she knew Yora III was a bit exporter of this technology. She knew not the depth of Starfleet allowance on the planet, as she didn't know a lot about the current diplomacy level Starfleet has with the Yorans. In situations like these, it was obvious a full membership of the Starfleet would grant the Yorans ever so needed protection, if foul play was about. "... leaving the city without basic services. This happened two days ago. We will arrive in several hours will be the first vessel to render aid. Other ships are coming, but we will be on our own until they do." ~There's a city I wouldn't like spending my vacation in.~ "Almost nothing is known about how or why the outage occurred, as Starfleet received the call for help from one of the rural communities. It is also not known why the Yorans have been unable to make repairs themselves." Captain started issuing specific orders, and Ailyn waited patiently to hear if she, and her crew that seemed as much eager as she was to get out of the ship, stretch the legs, and do something useful. "Doctor Andersen, you and your staff will render medical aid as needed." ~Finally some field work.~ "Are there any questions?" "Yes, in fact, I would like a class 1 probe sent over the Yora City to determine if sending the away team is even viable. If something went wrong with the chip factories, a lot of poisonous dust could have ended up in the air. Depending on the amount, it might not be detectable using standard ship sensors, but could still pose a risk. Scanning from up closer could give us more clues about a lot of things." (Reply: Sanok) "Yes, sir. I'd love to bring my team down, if it is possible, of course, as well." she explained, but it was more like a question. (Reply: Sanok) (Posted by: Lani) ----- (Rosenante, Observation Lounge, CO Captain Sanok, Day 1, 1008) "Are there any questions?" said Sanok. "Yes," said Dr. Andersen. "We will do that once we are in orbit," said Sanok. "Please send engineering the specifics for the probe, so it will be ready as soon as we arrive. Is there anything else?" "Yes, sir. I'd love to bring my team down, if it is possible, of course, as well." "Of course, Doctor. Take as many personnel as you can. What we have will help only a small percentage of the city population, but we will do what we can." When the meeting came to an end, Sanok dismissed the senior staff. (reply none) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Rosenante, Observation Lounge, CTac Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos, Day 1, 1011) Over three months had passed since the Rosenante left dock, Near three months that Jessica and Thomas had been rescued from the island and their relationship started. During which time their relationship had grown slowly cautiously, Thomas had done something no one else had done. He had chosen to accept her for her, her darkness, and her past. It was odd having Sanok as Captain, she knew he had no love for her or her past. He had told her that if it was up to him she would be off the ship. But when it came down to it he went against his nature and kept her on board he also made her the new tactical chief. Something that was completely out of the blue. It seemed for the first time since she first came the the Rosenante her life was moving forward. Life on the Rosenante had been busy. After leaving dock the Rosenante had picked up a good many severely needed tac officers and it was Jessica's responsibility to train them to the Rosenante's high standard. Jessica's own standards however was higher even still, taking control of the marine deck she gave the new tac officers hell. That was three months ago and now the new officers were starting to show promise. Now Jessica sat listening in on the meeting for the Rosenante's next mission and it seemed the quite was about to be shattered. A planets major city now dark. There the people would be panicking, they would be scared, resources would be running low and crime would be on the rise as the infrastructure of the city fell apart. These would all be concerns to Jessica has she had to make a plan on how to return order to the city. (reply none.) (posted by Matthew) ----- (Rosenante, Observation Deck, aCSO Ensign jg C'nell, Day 1, 1015) Before they left C'Nell caught up with Jessica and Jackson who were already discussing their plans. "Excuse me sir, Jessica" he interrupted them and then as was common for him simply continued without allowing them to respond with an unneeded human interjection "If I am to deal with the food situation I am going to need some tactical support from you or the local force; if I am to ensure that everyone gets their fair share, if the situation is really bad I expect stealing, it is illogical for the good of the people but some think for the good of the one" (Reply Jackson, Jessica) After talking to the two of them he put his hand on Jessica's shoulder "I have a feeling which my mother would describe as a bad instinct about this one, look after yourself" he said. Jessica was the only person with whom he could betray emotion; that emotion that wasn't quite as controlled as a normal Vulcan. (Reply Signos) He gave her a parting kiss before letting her go; noticing Jackson was none too happy to have one of his officers delayed by what certainly must count for illogical interruption. (Reply Jackson iyw) He turned and tapped his combadge "C'Nell to Engineering I need to know if there are any working replicators on the planet it would greatly help our situation providing food for the people down there, water supply too. I know you have your own problems, but give me an update as soon as you can." (Reply any Engineering staff) (posted by Nathan) ----- (Rosenante, Observation Deck, 2O/CSec LCDR Tom Jackson, Day 1, 1018) Tom and Jessica Signos were working out their shared assignments. C’Nell wandered over and broke into their conversation asking a question about support for his part of the upcoming mission. Tom waited a minute to see if Jessica was going to reply. Tom went ahead. “Ensign Signos and I were about to discuss support for the other areas when you walked up C’Nell” Tom added a bit irritably. (Reply: C’Nell) He seemed especially talkative on this occasion adding “I have a feeling which my mother would describe as a bad instinct about this mission”. Jackson smiled and added “Nothing wrong with being Alert Mr. C’Nell – keeps one on their toes”. (Reply: C’Nell, Jessica) C’Nell then well, surprised Tom as he awarded Jessica Signos a kiss. Jackson had wondered about their relationship during the rescue operation. Now it had been demonstrated further in public and on duty. “Mr. C’Nell, please remain for a minute –there is something you and I need to discuss privately. Ensign Signos, I’ll see you later “ Tom added. (reply: Signos and C’Nell) Once they were alone the Second Officer looked sternly at the young officer before speaking. “Mr. C’Nell, your recent action of the public display of affection to the Ensign was inappropriate. I will explain why. Please hold you response till I am finished Ensign” Tom said in the form of an order. (reply: C’Nell) “First, that behavior is unacceptable for a uniformed Starfleet officer on duty. We are a military organization. Second, Ensign Signos is your superior officer – that act made it hard for her to place you in harm’s way in the future should the need arise” Jackson said. (Reply: C’Nell) “Consider this some advice from an older officer to a younger officer – what you and Ensign Signos do off duty for the most part is not command’s business. On duty the CO , FO and I are held responsible for maintaining disciple and a well running crew. I do not want to see any further display’s like what I just saw. Is that understood?” Tom ordered. (Reply: C’Nell) Tom’s stern visage softened and he ordered “Mr. C’Nell you are dismissed” (Posted by: Bill W.) ----- (Rosenante, Sickbay, MO Ensign (jg) Sutton, Day 1, 1020) It had been about three months since Ed had joined the Rose and he was settling in quite well. Despite what most in other departments would say that it was just another boring patrol, people got hurt and sick regardless the level of excitement. And right now, he was treating another patient- this time for slipping on a ladder rung and breaking three of his front teeth. "Crewman, could you pass over the post and core for the number 41 please." Edward asked. The damage to two of the teeth was not enough to warrant an extraction, but one was. Ed took the post and core with a pair of dental forceps and inserted them into the pre-drilled hole in the lower jaw, affixing it with an adhesive compound, and placing a basic crown on it. "OK, now I'm going to get you to return tomorrow in order to get the final crown fitted. We just need this one to settle for about twenty-four hours. Other than that we're done!" He removed the mouth prop and cheek retractor, before sitting the patient up and letting him go back to his quarters for the rest of the day. As he removed the gloves, mask and smock, he breathed a sigh of relief, satisfied he had done a good job. ~Just another routine day.~ White lab coat on, tricorder in one pocket, and a tin of cinnamon Altoids in the other, Ed replicated a mug of tea and went to continue with a brief whirlwind of rounds on the the only two patients in the medbay, who were recovering from Herperan Thumping Cough. As he saw that they were recovering quite well, he was about to go back to his office, when he noticed the CMO return from the meeting. "Looked like a thrilling meeting Boss." Ed asked entering her office. (Reply Anderson) "Not a whole lot of cases. The two with Herperan Thumping Cough are recovering as per normal. Another case was just some dental work for a technician who slipped on a ladder rung, and finally, I also had Master Chief Oran's daughter, come in with a green pea up her nose." He reported leaning on the door frame. (Reply Anderson) "She said her friend dared her, which I didn't enquire further, but the extraction was simple." he replied placing an Altoid into his mouth, before offering the tin to Ailyn, "Altoid?" (Reply Anderson) "So was there anything specific for medical in the meeting?" (Reply Anderson) (Replies Anderson, Any) (posted by Paul) ----- (Rosenante, Personal Quarters, aCMO Paul Scudder, Day 1, 1021) "Computer." The computer chirped an acknowledgment. Paul had a habit of addressing the computer, always, even when simply stating the desired action—lights, tea, personal log—would suffice. And he had a slow, careful manner with the interface, a manner most sentient beings found belabored and tiring. "Personal log." Again, another chirp. Paul was in his new quarters aboard the Rosenante. He had been doing a little homemaking this morning, with a wooden flower pot and a metallic wall sculpture now adorning the space. The flower pot, without flowers for now, was hand-carved back on Earth by Paul's Pakistani great-great-grand-auntie. The wall sculpture, in cold metal contrast, was by a Vulcan artisan whose workshop Paul had visited when he was a teenager. Paul frowned at the two objects, realizing the unintentional symbolism he'd unpacked for himself. "Stardate 2414.11.01. I'm relieved to finally be in my permanent quarters for my first assignment, though I'm not sure how permanent this assignment ought to be. I feel at odds with myself, as seems my bothersome norm, and I'm constantly reminding myself that such a temperament will not be tolerated by Starfleet the way it was by Earth's art circles." Paul laughed. "Not that I feeling at all sane among so many vapid neurotics"— and here he caught himself, checked his sudden, charged energy, and wondered on it. Having calmed himself again, he continued. "I've met the CMO and most of the medical team, including a new transfer. A dentist. Everyone seems friendly and upbeat—a standard I already find myself incapable of maintaining. I am drained." Paul sat in the eerie silence of the room and then, abruptly, he stood. "Computer." Chirp. "End log." Paul started for Sickbay. As he maneuvered through the Rose's corridors, he felt a knot form in his stomach; he'd been very busy since leaving the starbase, yet he still somehow felt useless. (posted by Mark) ----- (Roseante, Observation Deck, ACSO Ensign (jg) Thomas C'Nell, Day 1, 1022) C'Nell didn't catch the irritation in his superiors voice, he found it very difficult to read humans who he didn't know very well and had always found Jackson relaxed in the past. "Ah very well I apologize commander" C'Nell said. When he told them about his feeling it was again the commander who replied, C'Nell didn't pay particular attention, he had wanted Signos to reply but she was strangely quiet. He was strangely talkative; that was different when they had shown up to Crewmen Leonard's wedding celebrations it was Signos who had guided him through the social situations of the day. He kissed her. He was unaware of the scorn he drew from Jackson as he did so. "Mr. C’Nell, please remain for a minute –there is something you and I need to discuss privately. Ensign Signos, I’ll see you later" Jackson interrupted them with this. C'Nell turned to him, Jackson's expression was stern as soon as Jessica left. “Mr. C’Nell, your recent action of the public display of affection to the Ensign was inappropriate. I will explain why. Please hold you response till I am finished Ensign” Tom said in the form of an order. C'Nell didn't understand that, if he wanted to finish speaking then why didn't he do that? "First, that behavior is unacceptable for a uniformed Starfleet officer on duty. We are a military organization. Second, Ensign Signos is your superior officer – that act made it hard for her to place you in harm’s way in the future should the need arise" he eventually continued. "With respect sir if I may say so-with Jessica's background I do not believe that it is an issue to allow personal things to get in the way of duty is illogical from my point of view" "consider this some advice from an older officer to a younger officer – what you and Ensign Signos do off duty for the most part is not command’s business. On duty the CO , FO and I are held responsible for maintaining disciple and a well running crew. I do not want to see any further display’s like what I just saw. Is that understood?” Tom ordered, with a stern expression perhaps he hadn't liked him speaking so frankly. "I understand Sir and again I apologize" C'Nell responded. Tom’s stern visage softened and he ordered “Mr. C’Nell you are dismissed” C'Nell turned and left. He puzzled over humanity, his adopted mother had always told him to show himself more, Jessica also when alone had similarly encouraged him. Sometimes she called him "her robot" he didn't understand that expression. He puzzled he just couldn't get the balance right. (Reply none) (Posted by Nathan) ----- (Rosenante, Sickbay, CMO Ensign (sg) Ailyn Andersen, Day 1, 1023) The ship was traveling to it's destination, there was still few hours left, and Ailyn knew she could get ready in time. So much data work, having to file in every procedure the medbay did, she felt lucky having a pair of very good assistant medical officers. Lately, they've been doing a good amount of the routine jobs, and even though at start, she monitored them to see if they're doing a good job, eventually she was satisfied knowing that, indeed, she didn't have to look over their shoulder to know they're doing a good job. As she recently got back from the meeting, she was still a little nervous and thinking - on a second level, subconsciously at least, about the mystery of Yora III. So many things could have happened. From trivial things such as power pipeline overload, to completely horrible things such as being attacked by an unknown force. Her heart sang for the first, that they are all alright, but her mind preferred the other, the action, the suspense... at the end of the day, though, it was all her thoughts, and consciously she was just concentrated on her job. She didn't even notice Ensign Sutton standing not far away from her, until he spoke. "Looked like a thrilling meeting Boss." he asked. Ailyn turned her head, seeing that it's Sutton, shrugged with her right shoulder, and leaned back on her chair. "Not thrilling... but refreshing at least. What about you, Ensign, had a thrilling morning of your own?" she asked, crossing the left leg over her right one. "Not a whole lot of cases. The two with Herperan Thumping Cough are recovering as per normal. Another case was just some dental work for a technician who slipped on a ladder rung, and finally, I also had Master Chief Oran's daughter, come in with a green pea up her nose." the man said leaning on the door frame. "Green pea... do I even want to ask how that happened?" she asked, almost putting her palm over her face. "She said her friend dared her, which I didn't enquire further, but the extraction was simple." Sutton explained, moving the tin towards Ailyn, "Altoid?" "No thank you." she said, waving her hand, she couldn't stand the flavours of those, she never knew what people find so fascinating about them. "So was there anything specific for medical in the meeting?" he asked. "We're heading towards Yora III. Power shortage has been reported in their main city, leaving the city without even the most basic of services. The reasons are unknown at the moment." she finished, letting out a sigh. Was it such a chore providing a secondary or emergency power systems for the most basic needs? This is the problem with powerful technology, Ailyn thought, it is so easy to get dependent on it. "Naturally, we are being sent as a medical support to the local population. We are to provide all the medical aid as possible." (Reply: Sutton) "Well, since we know so little, we could just keep on guessing. We will know more once we get into scanning range. I, of course, am counting on you being ready for the away team." she said dead serious, despite she wanted to smile. The man in front of her was more then ready, but she really needed to hear if he's interested in going down, when and if it comes to that. Has someone ever suggested to them to try turn the switch to "on"?" said Gan a bit to jest the situation. "Sabotage?" he then asked more seriously. Matrix laughed, "Agreed Lieutenant, but I'm sure there is more to it than that. That's what we need to be prepared for. Sometimes things are not what they appear." Replied Matrix. "Their temporary power shortage could be solved quickly. We have just refueled our tanks with deuterium and anti-deuterium. It wouldn`t really hurt out reserves to overproduce plasmas, seal them in tanks and use it on the surface as power sources. It would only last for a few weeks, but could buy us enough time to find a permanent solution." Continued Nolar. "Lieutenant, that is an excellent idea. Please proceed and take any personnel you feel are required. I will be at your disposal on this mission Lieutenant, I'm putting you in charge. Any questions?" asked Matrix. (Reply Nolar) "No I will be available as needed and will be accompanying you on the surface." Replied Matrix. (Reply Nolar) "Very well Lieutenant, carry one." Ordered Matrix. He saw Edward and Ailyn speaking to each other, neither noticing his entrance, and he considered taking advantage of this. He tapped the PADD to bring up the clerical work assigned to him for his shift, and again to review the status of the sickbay's patients. He sighed at his assignment and the nagging feeling that he shouldn't hide himself at a corner display panel for yet another shift. "Doctor Andersen, Doctor Sutton," Paul smiled expertly, with no evidence of the smile being forced, nodding to Ailyn and Edward in turn. "Good morning." The less formal surroundings of the Medbay, according to Ed, let information back and forth with ease, something which was essential in any medical facility. "We're heading towards Yora III. Power shortage has been reported in their main city, leaving the city without even the most basic of services. The reasons are unknown at the moment." She let out a sigh, which to Ed showed that she was becoming stressed about it."Naturally, we are being sent as a medical support to the local population. We are to provide all the medical aid as possible." "Three doctors for a whole city? Should be fun." Ed replied, with a slight hint of sarcasm. "Any idea of what we'll be up against? "Well, since we know so little, we could just keep on guessing. We will know more once we get into scanning range. I, of course, am counting on you being ready for the away team." Ailyn's expression was quite serious. ~Away team? Well there's a first time for everything.~ Ed thought to himself. "All out away team kits have been good to go since we began patrolling. I'll go through them again just to be sure, but I don't think we're missing anything as they were checked two days ago. Other than that, you can be sure I'll be ready to go down with you." He assured his supervisor. It was at that moment that another voice penetrated the quiet surrounds of Ailyn's office. "Doctor Andersen, Doctor Sutton, good morning." (reply Andersen / Sutton) (posted by mark) ----- (Rosenante, Sickbay, CMO Ensign (sg) Ailyn Andersen, Day 1, 1041) It seemed to Ailyn that Ensign Sutton was genuinely looking forward to the upcoming mission. Depending on the situation on the planet, it could be a perfect first away mission, she thought, that perhaps wouldn't put anyone in harm's way but could still teach the Ensign some practical experience. "Doctor Andersen, Doctor Sutton," Mr Scudder - an assistant medical officer Ailyn met a little while before said entering the medbay with a smile on his face. "Good Morning." he added. The duo obviously either met or knew each other before, as Ailyn listened how they were seamlessly talking as old friends would. "Doctor Sutton. I apologize if I startled you; it was not my intention. I did not want to interrupt your conversation with Doctor Andersen." Ensign Scudder said. "We were just talking of our upcoming mission. The Rose is enroute to Yora III, a planet suffering complete power shortage in at least their major city. If the Captain decides it is safe for away teams, we will be sent to provide the medical aid." she explained, nodding her head and showing the gentlemen basic information about Yora III on her PADD she had laying on her desk. (Reply: Sutton iyw) "I take it then you may prefer a different task for me, in the interim, than originally planned?" he inquired. There is still several hours left, but you should get ready for an away mission." she explained, trying to be as practical as possible. She knew three of them couldn't make such an grande difference for the large scale population, but no matter what was the situation in the Yora City, she knew that if they set their foot on that planet, she can get an temporary sickbay where they can start helping those in need - if there are any while waiting for other Starfleet ships to arrive. Still there were aspects of the job he still had to get used to. Over time he would gain the experience and further adjust into his new role. Lieutenant Nolar was as professional as always and was a natural at running engineering. Commander Jackson was shoring up the vacancy in security and training his crew extremely well. Matrix had noted in the crew reports that the security teams were getting more proficient in both tactics and execution. A tribute to Jackson's training and professionalism having taken over as chief of security. The crew was setting into their roles and the Rose was running as well as Matrix had ever seen. There were minor personnel issues but those were mainly scheduling problems between departments. Some of the department heads were simply stretched. In time new personnel would back fill the vacancies, but overall every one was doing a great job. The report to the Captain should be satisfactory. Also, we are unsure if we will be allowed to build a temporary medical site at all, or if we're gonna need it, so at the moment I wouldn't count on those lifts if I were you. At the worst case scenario, we will have to beam up and help as many patients as we can hold, but like I said, if it's possible - and needed, we'll be building a temporary medical site with all the necessary equipment." she finished, resting her head on her right hand. "As for the diabetes," she started again, despite she knew diabetes wouldn't really be any kind of a problem "Yorans are affected at the more-or-less stagnating ratio of 9% per overall population. (Reply: Scudder or Sutton) (Posted by: Lani) ----- (Rosenante, Deck 23, aCEO Lieutenant Nolar, Day 1, 1052) Once the briefing and discussions with his superiors completed, Gan had headed to deck 23. His first thought had been that if the city had no power, the USS Rosenante would be asked to provide it for them. An easy, but temporary way to do that was to store plasmas from the main reactor. Deck 23 was were the results of the matter-antimatter reaction was recovered. They would need to produce extra plasmas to recover it here. Gan checked each of the recycling system. They were all working properly. Changing a few setting, they were now ready to receive the plasma. The most complicated was the math. He had to calculate the amount of matter-antimatter that needed to be injected per seconds. He could have used a calculator, but one thing he learned from experience was the fact he went much faster when you did not had to rely on computer to do the math for you. Gan then headed back to main engineering where a group of engineers was waiting for him. "We need all the plasma tanks we can find. Bring them all to deck 23. Your six, I want you to fill the plasma tanks and replace them by empty one. You will need to be quick. I want us to have a good reserve when we will arrive at destination, so the warpcore will be running at optimal capacity." Gan ordered. The engineers nodded. "We will need to regulate the plasma flow. What we don't use for warp travel will have to be redirected to the recycling system for gathering. I need you two to regulate the flow." he ordered. "Yes, sir." replied the two engineers. "I doubt Captain Sanok will be ordering Warp 9.996, so the marge of unused power should be important enough to get all the plasma we need....... I need to prepare for the mission. Chief Korvas, you are in charge." Korvas nodded. Could we not therefore, replicate en mass a great deal of food supplements; we could reroute the replicators on the ship to transport their produce into a cargo bay, shuttle bay or some other large storage area. The problem is while I am confident with the time we have we could create enough when combined with the considerable food reserves on the planet to make a temporary solution until surface replication can occur, the power required to run all the ships replicators at once is astronomical, that is why I need engineering consent and the crew may suffer some discomforts.." (reply none) (posted by nathan) ----- (Rosenante, Main Engineering, aCEO Lieutenant Nolar, Day 1, 1111) The production of plasmas was underway. They did not needed him there anymore. All they had to do was to monitor the quantity produced and make sure all the safety protocols were respected. That done, Nolar was now working on the installation. Without energy, there would be no food, no way to operate the medical equipment.... Plasmas should allow the different city quarters to start reproducing energy for the city, following probable small modification of their power sources. They would need to send several teams of operations officers and engineer to make those modifications and make sure the plasmas were used intelligently. Even intelligent species could be stupid....as stupid enough to deplete all the plasmas they will provide for useless purposes. Energy should be used only for the basic needs. They would also need there own base with energy and everything. After all, it was going to take time. He was wondering if they should use plasmas as well, or install a small fusion reactor on the surface. Fusion reactors produced the most energy, but they would take the longer to install. Unless they used the shuttle warpcore, which would produce even more. The only problem was to be able to channel that energy to the installation, and not just the shuttle itself. He would need to bring plasma conduits to install the facility. It could be done in no time. Making sure it would be safe was another story. They would not have the same kind of protection than you find in a shuttle or ship nacelles. Forcefields would have to be erected just in case. Speaking of which, they were gonna need a lot of forcefields. A starving population without energy was one to steal and riot easily. If they wanted to keep the situation under control, they had to have lot of forcefields in place. Nolar moved to the main engineering computer to see how many forcefields they have in storage. He anticipated there wouldn't be enough and he would had to replicate several more. "Sir, you have a message from Ensign Andersen. She requires a probe for medical inspection of the city." said one of the engineer. "A probe... . Send Master Chief Daziv Kuran to take care of it." Nolar replied. "Yes, sir." the engineer answered.
